I’m Al Meier, a Farmer from South Dakota, I have farmed all my life. With me it’s all about family and agriculture. We run a fairly extensive farming and seed cleaning operation; we clean and bag all our own seed for resale and for our own use. We raise, clean and sell forage oats, several varieties of forage millets, beardless forage barley, and forage winter wheats along with conventional and non-GMO soybeans etc.
We are truly a family operation with, myself, my son, my son-in-law, my wife, are all involved extensively, and now, my Grandkids are getting involved with packaging, that sort of thing.
In our operation every aspect of production is overseen by a family member, in some way it’s either hands on, or inspecting production, as it’s happening. For example, in all our farming operations whether it’s field preparation, planting or harvesting it’s always a family member, usually my son operating one of the machines to assure that we are getting the best quality grain we can.
The way we got into the horse supplement business was, I’d known Lee Vandervorst the Nutra-Lix rep. for quite a while. He was telling me about Nutra-Lix Plus a horse supplement, that they developed about 20 years ago, and he said “it was a great product, but they were having challenges in marketing it, as you had to mix it with the feed and, the horses didn’t like to eat it, because it has a fairly strong smell, in it’s pure form, as vitamins tend to have”.
So, I suggested “why don’t we mix it with good heavy clean oats?”
So, we experimented with it for quite a long time, until we got the mixing process to exactly the right proportions. Then as an experiment, we gave away many many bags, to different people that had performance horse’s and, also to people that had a favorite pet, etc., and we had very good feedback on it; so, we decided to go the next step, and go into production.
We felt that by mixing it with heavy oats we had a better way of getting enough vitamins and minerals in a form that horses like.
Most other horse feeds out there are pelleted and if they have enough vitamins and minerals, they have to sweeten it up to get horses to eat it.
With our product they may not be excited about it at first, if they are used to eating a sweetened product. Because, like a kid, they would rather eat candy than what’s good for them. But you will be able to see the difference in their shiny hair coat, not having that “hot feeling” anymore, better immune system, reduction of stress & anxiety, better performance and health.
Michael Polanchek (Al’s son-in-law) is a Plant manager with MPM.
My job here at MPM is to ensure the quality of the product that leaves our facility.
I start with the product coming into the plant, product going through our cleaning machines. I’m also in charge of all of blending of the Oats with Nutra-Lix Plus. I'm there every step, I set up all the machines and make sure it's done right. I am there while we're bagging making sure everything is done up to the highest quality standards that we can.
It’s made and it’s readily available, with no added sugars, and most feed companies have a very challenging time, because when you put the vitamins and supplements at the levels that you actually need, the horses are finicky and don’t like to eat it; so the only way to get the horses to eat it, is to put it in a pelleted form, add sugars, which gives the horses, sugar highs. So, MPM has figured out how to develop and put it into OATS that the horses like to eat, so, you can have everything you need, but getting the horses to eat it and mixing it properly, are a huge challenge.
MPM is making it readily available to eat, it’s ready to go, putting a lot more consistency, the horse gets the right amount, and it means, it's ready to be fed in a 3-pound option.
All-important ingredients are at high levels of Biotin combined with DL Methionine a Nutritional supplement that promotes growth of healthy hooves, shiny coats, and skin conditions in horses.
L Lysine (it’s an a-amino acid that is used in the biosynthesis of proteins) - helps in use of protein in diet, supports health growth and development; Linseed oil - high level in Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, all sources of vitamins such as Vitamin E -neuromuscular health and function, vitamin B for calming the horse ; it has a Yucca plant extract for huge reduction in joint problems in horses , also significant amounts of Vitamin C that stimulate the production and activity of white blood cells (important for fighting infection and viruses);
When you put these levels in the vitamins, it does not taste very good, as the vitamins do not have a very good taste; but we have the vitamins and highly chelated form which is more readily available.
3 pounds is a very good maintenance level and it will give the horse all the trace minerals and vitamins, actually all the supplements first from hoof to mouth sores with the lysine and stuff it will do the job.
But if you want to see a higher performance because the horses being worked and travel harder, you can certainly go to 6 pounds and see you'll see a lot more performance and, because of that, the fact that we don't have it, you're not doubling the sugar, you will see that and the vitamin B12 to offset it, should have a controllable energy.
Nutra-Lix Plus was developed 20 years ago, Doctor Douglas Butler and by Doctor Rick Redden who helped developed this product and it was developed for all sorts of horses. It was one of the first products out there to, actually have the required amounts of vitamins and supplements, that horses needed for of most of their health problems, so that what Nutra-Lix Plus is and was developed for.
